The Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art was opened to the public in February 2007. The new museum is situated in a former customs warehouse in the Inner Harbour of Vaasa. Thanks to the new museum, both national and international exhibitions of modern and contemporary art are now a permanent feature of Vaasa?s artistic life. The base collection in the Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art is the Kuntsi Foundation?s art collection ? one of the most important classic collections of contemporary art in Finland covering pop art, kinetic art as well as committed art, informalism, surrealism, new expressionism, postmodernism? The more than 900 works forming the collection are a cross section of modern art history, from international modernists to the Finnish artists of today. But most of all, it is the classic collection of Finnish contemporary art created in the 1950s and onward.

The museum area is made up of about 60 buildings, for example, a village shop, a school, a farmstead, and crofters cabins. All of the museum buildings originate from nearby villages. Most of them were moved to Stundars in the 1960s and 1970s. In Hemmersgården art exhibitions and cultural events are held. There are also art studios, a printing museum, a handicraft shop, café and restaurant (opened on request). Together, they reflect life in Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia at the turn of the 20th century.

The Kilen Local Museum Foundation was established in the 1960s. Today Kilen serves not only as an open-air museum, but also as a camp venue, an inn and a hostel: The museum consists of some 20 buildings. All of the buildings have been relocated from different villages in Kristinestad. Originally Kilen was a fishing harbour and the museum reflects this cultural environment: it presents the fishing and farming culture which has been characteristic of the coastal villages of Swedish speaking Ostrobothnia. At Kilen there is also a school museum and a coastal chapel symbolising the chapels common along the coast in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Stundars in Korsholm is a large open-air museum and a living centre of culture and art.

Södersund wind mill
Arholmintie
65410 Sundom
This windmill was constructed in the early years of the 19th century, when the Söderfjärden plain was still covered by water. The year 1809 is cut into the wood in the mill and is likely to be the year when it was built. Mr Isak Jakobsson Schöring (1759-1833) was the farmer that owned the land where it was built. According to tradition, a sailor, Skata Johan, was the architect. He had sailed many years as the ship%27s carpenter and most likely also visited Holland, while the mill is built in the Dutch style. This kind of a windmill is unique in Finland. The mill was used for about one hundred years for grinding meal and planing wood to small, slim pieces, used for covering roofs. The mill was not used after 1910 and was without wings until 1991, when the association Bygdeföreningen renovated it.

The wide stone fields make a sharp contrast to the surrounding green nature. You can wander a few kilometers and experience the diversity of cliffs, forests, ravines and groves. The knowledge of the fact that the caves have been dwelled before the latest Ice Age makes the area unique. The museum, which is run by the Kaskinen Local Museum Society, was opened in its present form in 1984. It is located in a wooden residence erected in the mid-nineteenth century by shipowner, factory owner and trader Carl Daniel Rehnström. Most of the rooms show the life of a middle-class family in the mid-eighteen hundreds. The museum aims to relate various aspects of the history of Kaskinen. Thus, the museum also includes the interior of a fisherman%27s cottage, a school exhibition (a classroom) and a ship- broker%27s office COLLECTIONS The museum has a permanent exhibition of textiles. There is also a large collection of hats and outfits that once belonged to middle-class families in Kaskinen. Among the exhibits is a silk wedding dress dating from 1822. The museum exhibitions relate the rich maritime history of Kristinestad. The focus is on mid-nineteenth century shipping, when Kristinestad was one of the most important shipyard ports in Finland. The Maritime museum was opened in 1983. The museum is housed in two localities: partly in the attic of the Town Library on the northern side of the market place and partly in the storehouse at the Badhusparken park. Accordingly, the Maritime museum is located in a very fitting environment: the main exhibition is housed in the large attic and is suggestive of the deck of a sailing ship, including among other things a captain%27s cabin and a deckhouse. The storehouse on the south side of the Badhusparken park, at the end of Strandgatan, is the last remnant of the large shipyards of Kristinestad. Exhibited here is a small collection of sailing boats from Kristinestad, Skaftung and Sideby along with objects like boat engines. The furnishings of a sailor%27s home complete the picture.

The centre of Kristinestad represents a wooden house environment that is unique both in Finland and in Scandinavia. South of the market place lies the Merchant House Lebell. This museum describes the life of a merchant%27s family in Kristinestad more than 200 years ago. The present merchant house was built in 1762 with a tall mansard roof. In the 1850s this roof was replaced with a hipped Empire-style saddle roof. The Merchant House Lebell has served as a museum since 1939. Over the years, interiors from the 18th and early 19th century have carefully been recovered and restored. There is even a reproduced 17th century baroque hall. The hall, with its ceiling painting and linen tapestry imitating gilt leather is unique in Finland. Exhibited here is a fine cupboard lacquered in black from Stralsund, dating from 1695. The green tiled stove is probably the oldest in Finland.

Barrack square
Kasarminkatu 6
Vaasa
The Orthodox Church was completed in 1862, but was then still surrounded by a large bare area, which according to the plan was to be gradually transformed into Alexander Square, now called Kasarmintori. The designs included the establishment of a park around the church, surrounded by a fence, but there were no financial resources for this. The low stonewall that surrounds the church today was built by the city authorities, but not until the 1950´s. The pathway around the church was also paved at that time and bushes were planted along the inside of the wall. The southern part of the park flourishes today, dominated by maples, bushes and fir-trees. In the year 2000, a plan was made for the renewal of the park´s trees, which is now gradually being realised. At the north end of Kasarrnintori there is a gravel sports pitch. On the south side of the church there is a playground, as well as the so-called ´Wall of Tradition´, surrounded by field guns.
Birch park
Kolukatu 38
Vaasa
Koivupuisto is situated on a lovely slope that faces west towards the sea. The area was originally intended to become a square. Gradually, however, the area was instead developed into a park. In 1987, the American landscape architect Kurt Meyers designed a new plan for the park featuring a fountain and a man-made stream in unhewn stone, which give the park its special character today. Beside the stream there is a granite sculpture of a bear, created by architect and sculptor Matti Visanti. The birch-trees that gave the park its name are still its main feature. Several types of bushes and perennial flowers have been planted on the open lawns that lie between gravel pathways, sloping down to Rantakatu.

The building now belongs to the city authorities and is in use as a day-care nursery. The Park itself is structured with two levels, the higher level is intended for playing and the lower has a stricter layout with a fountain and statues. The park is encircled by old lime-trees, and crab-apple trees and American pin cherry trees have been planted around the fountain.
