The Kilen Local Museum Foundation was established in the 1960s. Today Kilen serves not only as an open-air museum, but also as a camp venue, an inn and a hostel: The museum consists of some 20 buildings. All of the buildings have been relocated from different villages in Kristinestad. Originally Kilen was a fishing harbour and the museum reflects this cultural environment: it presents the fishing and farming culture which has been characteristic of the coastal villages of Swedish speaking Ostrobothnia. At Kilen there is also a school museum and a coastal chapel symbolising the chapels common along the coast in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Surprise yourself with our exhibitions! Take a look at the Eastern House, wich has been decorated as it was in the 1940s, the textile-exhibitions or old motorbikes. Take a walk at the Vikingtrack to see foundations of old houses and graves from the Viking-era. The café, which is furnished in the 1940s style, can offer a good cup of coffee and home-made pastry. Enjoy titbits like waffles with strawberry marmelade and whipped cream, or a pancake á la Kärklax. Spend an unforgettable night in Johan Storm´s house which furniture is back from the 19th century. We can book a summer cottage or an old house for you in the archipelago.
